I’m currently in a treatment center and my first one on one with my counselor resulted in her telling me she believes I have Religious Trauma due to my Pentecostal upbringing from ages 3-14 and my rebellion against it as a teenager.
Now for one this is the first I’m hearing about “Religious Trauma “ and I feel that yes , while being a strict religion full of do’s and don’ts, I chose an alternative lifestyle that was far from anything that would be called acceptable in the Pentecostal Religion. Is that alone considered Trauma? I feel it is not but I would like the opinion of others because maybe there is something I’m missing that lead to my mental health issues and my substance dependency.

I think one thing that’s important to consider when asking this is- does it continue to affect you? When we consider other trauma diagnoses, such as PTSD, we look at how it’s effecting that person now. For me, I had, and sometimes still have, A LOT of anxiety around going to Hell. It’s something that absolutely still affects my life. In my opinion, just because you left a high control religion doesn’t automatically mean you have religious trauma, even if others in the same situation do. What’s traumatic to one isn’t necessarily traumatic to another.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, there is no easy answer to this and you have to examine your specific situation and how religion/leaving religion effected you. Might be worth exploring more in therapy if you haven’t already.
